High angular resolution diffusion images of the brain stem

 

At 7T, the spatial resolution of diffusion imaging is also improved by an order of magnitude. Compared to the resolution limited to 2x2x2 mm3 at 1.5T or 3.0T due to a poor signal to noise ratio, the recent methodological developments performed at NeuroSpin now enable the acquisition of diffusion-weighted data endowed with an isotropic millimeter resolution (figure 2), more suitable to study the fine anatomical connectivity of the SN/STN/RN/PPN. The nigro-striatal fibre pathways have much smaller diameter than the main fibre bundles of the brain usually investigated in the literature. The studies relying on diffusion-weighted imaging recently published in the literature failed at segregating relevant biomarkers of the structural disorders in the nigo-striatal connectvity, probably due to the insuffficient resolution with respect to the diameter of the involved pathways.
